Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the player and his coach.
